Custom dress manufacturing starts with a clear design brief, an agreed fabric and fit, and a sample approved before bulk production. For fashion brands, the key decision is whether a manufacturer can translate the intended silhouette into repeatable garments across your size range.
This guide explains the information to prepare, the sample checks to make and the order terms to confirm when sourcing custom dress production.
What to send before requesting a quotation
- Design drawings, reference images or a technical pack.
- Fabric requirements or a physical material reference.
- Garment measurements, size range and quantity by size.
- Number of designs, colors and pieces per color.
- Artwork and requirements for logos, labels or packaging.
- Delivery destination and target delivery date.
If some details are undecided, identify them in your inquiry. Ask the manufacturer to list quotation assumptions and any development fees. This makes it easier to compare quotations and avoids treating an early estimate as a final production price.
Choose fabric for the silhouette, not just the photograph
A structured dress, a flowing maxi dress and a fitted stretch dress require different material decisions. Share the intended drape, opacity, stretch and care requirements. If you only have a reference image, describe which features you want to reproduce and ask for suitable material options.
- Drape: evaluate whether the fabric hangs as intended in the actual sample.
- Opacity: check under normal lighting and decide whether lining is needed.
- Stretch: review how it affects movement, recovery and sizing.
- Color and print: approve the material reference and placement requirements before production.
Check fit and construction during sampling
Provide a measurement chart and explain the intended fit. Check bust, waist, hip, length and any sleeve measurements against that chart. A sample in one size does not establish fit across the entire collection; discuss grading and whether additional size samples are needed.
Inspect zipper operation, lining attachment, seams, hems and closures. For fitted styles, assess movement and comfort as well as appearance. Record revisions in one written list, supported by photographs, so both teams work from the same approval criteria.
Understand a 50-piece MOQ correctly
YIMAN’s minimum order quantity is 50 pieces per design, per color, with mixed sizes allowed. One design in two colors requires at least 100 pieces. Two designs in two colors each require at least 200 pieces.
You can distribute the quantity within each design and color across sizes. Confirm your size breakdown before placing the order. Ask whether your selected custom fabric, trims or decoration has additional minimums or costs.
Approve samples and confirm the production schedule
Sample development and bulk production schedules are confirmed for each project after reviewing the design, materials, quantities and revisions. Agree whether the schedule uses working or calendar days and what starts each period. Confirm shipping time separately before committing to a delivery date.
- Agree the design brief, material choices and quotation assumptions.
- Develop the sample and document requested changes.
- Approve the final sample and written specifications.
- Confirm quantities, payment terms, quality requirements and timing.
- Arrange production checks and delivery according to the agreed order terms.
Keep an approved reference sample. Ask whether it uses the intended bulk materials and identify any substitutions. Agree acceptable measurement tolerances and how discrepancies will be handled; a sample alone does not guarantee the whole order.
Compare the full cost of your order
Ask which costs are included: sampling, pattern development, materials, decoration, labels, packaging, inspections and freight. Confirm the currency, quote validity, payment milestones and delivery terms. Compare suppliers using the same specifications and quantities.
Discuss reorder conditions too. Material availability, minimum quantities and the need for a new sample can affect a later order. Keeping a complete approved specification helps both teams communicate consistently.
