Volume starts with a measurable construction decision. Gathering distributes fullness, pleats organize folds, and quilting joins layers. Choose the effect for your customer, fabric and garment, then approve the dimensions and behavior in a physical sample.
Shape, volume and layered construction

Pleating is not automatically permanent. Agree the material, processing method and intended care procedure, then check the sample after that procedure. A visually similar fold may behave differently on a different fiber or finish.
Define the shape before sampling
For gathered sections, identify the attachment length and intended fullness. For pleats, specify depth, spacing, direction and secured areas. For quilting, describe every layer, filling if used, and the stitch pattern.
Inspect the finished silhouette
- Check the resulting measurements, not just the flat fabric.
- Review how volume falls when worn and during movement.
- Check fold placement and symmetry against the brief.
- Evaluate the approved care process and dimensional changes.
Are heat-set pleats permanent?
Do not assume so. Fiber, processing and care influence retention. Agree the process and assess a representative sample after the intended care procedure.
